Great Allegheny Passage
The Great Allegheny Passage is a world-class rail-trail stretching from near Pittsburgh to Cumberland, MD. Historic tunnels, bridges and viaducts carry cyclists and hikers on a nearly level scenic trip over and through the Allegheny Mountains. The trail follows the Youghiogheny and Casselman rivers for much of the way. In Cumberland, it connects with the C&O Canal Towpath providing a continuous non-motorized route to Washington, D.C. Confluence is one of several "trail towns" along the route where cyclists and hikers can find lodging, dining, and shopping facilities.

Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
This 70-mile hiking and backpacking trail from Ohiopyle to near Johnstown is the main feature of Laurel Ridge State Park which stretches across four counties in the Laurel Highlands region. The trail is open year-round and is blazed approximately every 100 feet with 2-inch and 5-inch yellow blazes. Connector trails lead to and from parking and shelter areas and are marked with blue blazes. Mileage monuments are every mile. There are eight overnight shelters located approximately 6-10 miles apart. Reservations for shelter use are required.

Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail
The Great Allegheny Passage bike trail is a significant segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, one of only 11 nationally designated scenic trails in the country. The 830-mile corridor begins at the Forks of the Ohio in Point State Park in Pittsburgh and then follows the Great Allegheny Passage to Cumberland, MD where it joins the C&O Canal Towpath.

The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is filled with history, culture, and outdoor adventure. The trail network embraces both shores of the tidal Potomac River, the escarpment within the Nation's capital, trails within the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath, and the Great Allegheny Passage.

The corridor offers the outdoor enthusiast ample opportunities to visit again and again to hike, bike, paddle and explore. Almost every outdoor recreational activity can be found at one place or another along this spectacular corridor. To fully explore the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, you can find itineraries for all sections as well as a myriad of outdoor activities on www.potomacheritage.net. The Middle Yough, Laurel Hill Creek, and Whiteʼs Creek are considered some of the best trout waters in the region. Artificial lakes, such as the Yough, High Point, Cranberry, and Laurel Hill harbor a variety of game fish. We have lots of great options for fishing:

Youghiogheny River - A gem of the East with cold-water releases in Maryland and Pennsylvania that maintain good trout temperatures year round.

Middle Yough - 11 miles of "trophy trout" waters and home to 20-inch browns and rainbows.

Lower Yough - 12 miles of world-famous whitewater and great fishing with little fishing pressure.

Upper Yough - Catch-and-release and delayed-harvest areas.

Laurel Hill Creek - Shaded by hemlocks, this stream has two delayed-harvest sections and great trout fishing.

Dunbar Creek - This is a great stream for native brook trout with good canopy, cool temps, and great hatches.

Meadow Run - This stream can be a challenge with its laurel and rhododendron-lined banks, but includes a delayed- harvest section and classic stream-side beauty.

Whites Creek & McClintock Run - Stocked cold-water fisheries.

Enos Run - Wild brook trout.

Youghiogheny River Lake - Northern pike, walleye, trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and panfish.

High Point Lake - Muskellunge, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and panfish.

Lake Somerset - Muskellunge, walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish.

Laurel Hill Lake - Largemouth bass and rainbow trout.

Cranberry Lake - Largemouth bass.

Boating
The nearly 4,000-acre Youghiogheny River Lake winds 16 miles from Confluence southeast into western Maryland. Modern launch facilities at the dam, just outside of the town, accommodate ski, fishing, pontoon, and pleasure boats. Rentals are available at the Somerfield Recreation Area just south of Confluence.

Canoeing
Visitors to Confluence can choose canoeing experiences from mild to wild. The Youghiogheny River Lake just outside town has expansive flat waters and secluded coves. Confluence is the gateway to the nationally renown Middle Youghiogheny in Ohiopyle State Park with a peppering of whitewater and gentle drifts through the deepest water gap in Pennsylvania. The lower Youghiogheny, just 11 miles west, is for boaters searching for the thrill of big whitewater.

WHITEWATER RAFTING

Confluence is convenient to a wide array of whitewater experiences in the Allegheny Mountains. The town is the gateway to the middle Youghiogheny River suitable for family adventures. Ohiopyle, for guided tours of the bigger whitewater of the lower Yough, is just 11 miles away. And for the real thrill seeker the upper Yough in western Maryland is an hour's drive. The Casselman River and Laurel Hill Creek add to the opportunities when they are running bank full during the Spring.
